Is it Dump on Obama Time?

September 15, 2009 - Eric Chabrow

It's not just on healthcare reform that members of his own party are pressuring President Obama, but on cybersecurity reform, too.

Rep. James Langevin, the Rhode Island Democrat who co-chairs the House Cybersecurity Caucus, wrote to Obama this past week, expressing displeasure that the president has yet to name a cybersecurity adviser more than three months after promising he would do so.

Now, another supposed ally, freshman Rep. Anne Kirkpatrick, D.-Ariz., warns that national security is being jeopardized by shortfalls in administration cybersecurity efforts. In remarks prepared to be delivered on the House floor, Kirkpatrick said:

"The president has said that securing our nation's networks is a priority for his administration. However, I am concerned that while Congress was away in August, two of our government's top cybersecurity officials resigned, and we still have no cybersecurity coordinator within the White House.

Kirkpatrick was referring to the departures of Melissa Hathaway as the White House acting senior director of cyberspace and Mischel Kwon as director of the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team.

Added the Arizona lawmaker, who serves on the House Homeland Security Committee:

"We must regain focus, fill these vacant high-level positions and implement a plan to secure our networks before an attack does irreparable harm to our nation."
